What Is Work?

In physics, work is said to be done when a force causes a displacement of an object in the direction of the force.
Mathematically:

Work (W) = Force (F) × Displacement (s) × cosθ
where θ is the angle between force and displacement.

What Is Energy?

Energy is the capacity of a body to do work. It exists in various forms such as kinetic energy, potential energy, thermal energy, etc.

  • Kinetic Energy (KE): Energy of motion = ½mv²
  • Potential Energy (PE): Energy due to position = mgh

What Is Power?

Power is the rate at which work is done or energy is transferred.

Power (P) = Work done (W) / Time taken (t)
The SI unit of power is the watt (W).

Key Points:

• A body with higher speed or greater mass has more kinetic energy.
• Work and energy are scalars and have the same SI unit — the joule (J).
• Power tells how fast work is done.
