Definition of Internal Resistance
Internal resistance is the resistance offered by the electrolyte and electrodes
inside a cell to the flow of electric current when the circuit is closed.
Explanation
When a cell supplies current to an external circuit, some energy is lost inside the cell due to
its internal resistance. As a result, the terminal voltage of the cell becomes less than its
electromotive force (emf).
The value of internal resistance depends on the nature of electrolyte, distance between electrodes,
temperature, and the condition of the cell.
Internal resistance increases as the cell becomes weak or discharged.
