Prove that 1 amu = 931 MeV.

Prove 1 amu = 931 MeV is a very important numerical–theoretical question from nuclear physics.

Given

1 atomic mass unit (amu) = 1.66 × 10−27 kg

To Prove

1 amu = 931 MeV

Explanation / Proof

According to Einstein’s mass–energy relation, energy equivalent of mass is given by:

E = mc²

Substituting the value of mass:

m = 1.66 × 10−27 kg

c = 3 × 108 m/s

Energy obtained is approximately equal to 1.49 × 10−10 joule.
Converting joule into electron volt gives energy nearly equal to 931 MeV.

Hence, proved that 1 amu = 931 MeV.

Note:

This relation is very useful in nuclear physics to calculate binding energy and mass defect of nuclei.
