Differentiate Between Shunt and Multiplier

The concept of shunt and multiplier is important in electrical measurements. Both are used with galvanometers to convert them into different measuring instruments.

Shunt

A shunt is a low resistance connected in parallel with a galvanometer. It allows most of the current to bypass the galvanometer, thereby protecting it from damage.

  • Connected in parallel with galvanometer
  • Used to convert galvanometer into an ammeter
  • Has very low resistance
  • Measures high current

Multiplier

A multiplier is a high resistance connected in series with a galvanometer. It limits the current through the galvanometer so that high voltage can be measured safely.

  • Connected in series with galvanometer
  • Used to convert galvanometer into a voltmeter
  • Has very high resistance
  • Measures high voltage
Note:

Remember:
Shunt → Ammeter → Parallel → Low Resistance
Multiplier → Voltmeter → Series → High Resistance
