Angle of Friction in Physics Concept and Proof

The angle of friction in physics is a fundamental concept in mechanics that describes the maximum angle at which an object can rest on a surface without sliding due to friction.

What Is the Angle of Friction?

The angle of friction is the angle between the resultant reaction force and the normal reaction when an object is about to move (at the limiting equilibrium) on a surface.

Forces Acting on the Object

When an object rests on a surface, the forces acting on it include:

  • Normal reaction (R) perpendicular to the surface
  • Frictional force (f) parallel to the surface
  • Resultant force (r) which combines R and f

Proof / Derivation

At the verge of motion (limiting equilibrium), the frictional force f = μR. The resultant force r makes an angle θ with the normal reaction R.

By definition:

tan θ = f/R

Substituting f = μR gives:

tan θ = μ

θ = tan⁻¹(μ)

Here, θ is the angle of friction, and μ is the coefficient of friction between the surfaces.

Note:

The angle of friction depends on the nature of the surfaces in contact — rougher surfaces have larger angles of friction.
