Nuclear fission is the process in which a heavy atomic nucleus splits into two or more lighter nuclei when struck by a slow-moving neutron, releasing a large amount of energy.

  • Occurs in heavy nuclei like uranium-235
  • Releases neutrons and energy
  • Used in nuclear reactors

Nuclear Fusion

Nuclear fusion is the process in which two or more light atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a very large amount of energy.

  • Occurs at very high temperature and pressure
  • Takes place in the sun and stars
  • Produces more energy than fission

Key Point:

Nuclear fission splits heavy nuclei, while nuclear fusion joins light nuclei to release energy.
