Define Beat and Beat Frequency

Understanding beat and beat frequency is important in wave physics. Beats are formed due to the interference of two sound waves of slightly different frequencies.

Definition of Beat

A beat is a periodic variation in the loudness (amplitude) of sound when two sound waves of nearly equal frequencies interfere. The sound appears to oscillate between loud and soft.

Definition of Beat Frequency

Beat frequency is the number of beats heard per second. It is equal to the absolute difference between the frequencies of the two interfering sound waves.
Formula: fbeat = |f₁ − f₂|

Note:

Beats are commonly used in tuning musical instruments and in acoustic experiments to detect small differences in frequency.
