The Phenomenon of X-Ray Production Is Also Called Inverse of Photoelectric Effect – Why?

The phenomenon of X-ray production is also called inverse of photoelectric effect is a very important conceptual question in modern physics. This question is frequently asked in Class 11, NEB, and CTEVT examinations.

phenomenon of x-ray production is also called inverse of photoelectric effect

Phenomenon of X-Ray Production

In X-ray production, fast-moving electrons strike a heavy metal target and suddenly lose their kinetic energy. This lost energy is converted into X-rays.

Why Is It Called Inverse of Photoelectric Effect?

In the photoelectric effect, incident light energy is converted into kinetic energy of electrons. However, in X-ray production, the kinetic energy of electrons is converted into electromagnetic radiation (X-rays). Hence, the phenomenon of X-ray production is also called inverse of photoelectric effect.

Note:

Photoelectric effect converts light energy into electron energy, whereas X-ray production converts electron energy into light energy.

Exam-Oriented Answer

Therefore, the phenomenon of X-ray production is called the inverse of photoelectric effect because the energy conversion process is exactly opposite in both phenomena.
