Determine the Unit and Dimension of Centripetal Force

Determine the Unit and Dimension of Centripetal Force is a very important topic of physics especially for Class 11 and competitive examinations like NEB, CEE, JEE, and others. Here you will learn definition, dimensional formula, and units in a very simple way.

determine the unit and dimension of centripetal force

What is Centripetal Force?

Centripetal force is the force that keeps an object moving along a circular path. Without this force, the object would move in a straight line due to inertia. It always acts towards the centre of the circular path.

Formula of Centripetal Force

The standard formula of centripetal force is given by:

F = mv²/r

SI Unit of Centripetal Force

The SI unit of centripetal force is Newton (N).

Explanation

Newton is the unit of force. Since centripetal force is basically a type of force, therefore its SI unit becomes Newton.

Dimensional Formula of Centripetal Force

Force = mass × acceleration

Therefore dimension = ML/T²

So the dimensional formula of centripetal force = M L T⁻²

Important Concept

The direction of centripetal force is always towards the centre. It is not a separate force but can be tension, friction, or gravitational force that acts as centripetal force depending on the situation.

Real Life Examples

  • A stone tied in a rope and rotated
  • Car moving on a circular track
  • Earth revolving around Sun
Note: Centripetal force is necessary for circular motion. If this force becomes zero, the object will immediately leave the circular path.

Conclusion

Finally we can say that centripetal force plays an important role in circular motion. Its unit is Newton and its dimension is M L T⁻². This topic is very important for school exams and entrance exams.
